You can try to teach youth about history by having them read textbooks or you can let them make history themselves. When we first met with the Nebraska Urban League on doing a film with a group of youth about ‘Cultural Literacy’ we weren’t sure what that meant. We then found out latter that meant interviewing African American’s from the community to get a big picture on all sorts of topics. Families, history, community and so much more. These youth also and to film and help with the direction it went. It was a real life learning experience for not only them but also us. Real life has been and always will be the best learning experience.
